We’ve got the jazz

The sound can hit your body like a tumult of hard, electric rain or lightly tickle your skin with the dance of a feather. It makes you tap your foot, nod your head, and shake your rump.

Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong, John Coltrane, Count Basie, Billie Holiday, Dizzy Gillespie, Nina Simone, and Chet Baker were the parents and grandparents of jazz. While the greats have long past, generations of musicians will keep it alive forever. Particularly if events like the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival keep happening.

From June 21st to July 1st, our city celebrates icons and aficionados of the musical genre at the 28th annual festival.

Here are our top five picks for the eleven days of jazz:

1. The Vancouver Art Gallery, from Georgia Street to south of Robson Street, will be home to four music venues. You won’t even have to leave to get nourishment… a food and artisan market will be set up on Howe Street. Even if the music can’t be heard, we’re sure musical notes will be seen floating in the sky from miles around.

2. Macy Gray and her gravelly, sultry voice will be performing with the David Murray Infinity Quartet at the Vogue Theatre on June 27th.

3. Red Baraat have fused a bhangra and jazz beat together to create music that will get under your skin and make your body move. Catch them at the Vogue Theatre on June 28th.

4. You won’t believe that Nikki Yanofsky is only 19 when you hear the sweet, powerful voice fall out of her mouth. She’ll be at the Vogue Theatre on June 29th.

5. Los Angeles group Orgone sounds as smooth and rich as creamy peanut butter - a blend of funk and jazz that should be played in a dark and smoky basement bar. They’ll be on the Georgia Stage on June 22nd at 7:30pm.
